Attack Raids

Understanding the way that the Lucavi attacks is vital how to stop them. This
help file covers the standard Lucavi attack raid in which black materia are
used. The other types of raids are covered in their own help files, although
they often share similarities to normal raids.

In a standard Lucavi raid, monsters attack by moving toward the center of
Elsendor. Enemy forces will come from distant locations through the portals
opened at the borders of Elsendor (see milit help paths). Once those monsters
reach center, they rampage, killing citizens. The job of the militia is to
stop the monsters before they hit the center of town.

Roles of the CO and XO:

In preparation for a raid, the CO or XO will assign members to various
platoons, each platoon having specific roles. See below for information on
platoon roles. There are four platoons, any of which may be open. Typing
"mwho" will show you which platoons are currently open. If a platoon is not
listed in mwho, then it is considered closed, which means that no Lucavi will
attack from that direction and the militia can ignore it. It is up to the CO
and XO to decide how to allocate the militia members to the platoons;
intelligent allocation is looked upon favorably when considering promotions.
Frequently the CO or XO will need to adjust platoon allocation in mid-raid.
COs and XOs who are capable at handling the allocation of members throughout
raids stand a good chance of going far in the militia. REMEMBER: militia
allocation is a continuous job since people may come and go throughout a raid.
Keep yourself updated on platoon allocation periodically using mwho and
platwho.

The first thing the CO and XO should do when a red alert is signaled is to
check Elsendor and make sure no monsters are already in town, and kill any that
are. The next step is to scout for black materia. The Lucavi use black
materia to create their troops. If the black materia aren't recovered in a
timely fashion, Elsendor is very likely to be overrun. There are certain
locations throughout the mud that materia holders may appear (see milit help
blackmateria). The CO and XO must scout these locations, asking for assistance
if necessary, and kill any such mob holding black materia. The materia must be
then picked up and deposited in the deposit room (using the command 'milit
deposit all' will work). A raid won't end until all materia have been
returned, as monsters will be created while any black materia remains
undeposited.

During materia scouting, the CO and XO must still pay attention to reports from
the directional platoons regarding breaches (see below). Stop the breaches
before conducting any further scouting. Once materia scouting has been
completed, the CO and XO may assist the directional platoons with scouting via
the watch tower or walking the invasion routes. They should not kill monsters
unless the monsters are in Elsendor, or a directional platoon has asked for
help. The role of the CO and XO is to scout, that's why they're in the Scout
platoon. As reports come in from the directional platoons, the CO and XO will
decide when to turn the red alert into a yellow, and then green, alert. Recall
that a yellow alert indicates that no monsters _probably_ remain; there's no
shame in turning a yellow back into red if monsters are found. A green alert
should be issued when everyone is certain no monsters remain.

Roles of the Platoons:

The scout platoon consists of the CO and XO (no exceptions) as well as other
people needed for various tasks that require the ability to assist all of the
directional platoons. For example, goblin killers and apanda killers are
sometimes put in scout, so that they can easily move between realms, killing
their special opponents.

The directional platoons guard the paths into Elsendor that correspond to their
direction. It is very dangerous to leave the area to which you have been
assigned; have the CO or XO permit any such relocation before taking it upon
yourself to do so.

Choke points, or "chokes", are key rooms in the defense of Elsendor (see milit
help paths). Any monster attempting to attack Elsendor must go through a choke
point. There is at least one such point for each directional platoon. It is
up to the CO and XO to decide how to guard these points; the default strategy,
if no special orders are given, is to have one person at the choke point or
very near to it at all times. It is important that the people guarding the
choke points report breaches (monsters getting past them) on the platoon
channel IMMEDIATELY.

Scouting within directional platoons is another essential part of defense. A
large swarm can overcome an army that merely waits at the choke points, but
such a swarm can be defeated with sufficiently early detection. Ideally each
directional platoon will have one or more members scouting the invasion routes
(see milit help paths). This player should report problems that may require
special attention on the 'platoon' channel, or on their platoon's channel
('pwest', 'pnorth', etc.), as appropriate. REMEMBER: Communication on the
channels is critical to successful defense.

Conclusion:

Many of the concepts brought up here can be applied to the other raid types as
well. Every militia member should understand this help file. Be sure to ask
if anything in this help file is unclear.
